I am stunned by how many hand-lettering signs I have seen around London in just the short amount of time that I have been here. Some of the signs that I have seen around town (pictured below) have been absolutely beautiful. I personally love hand-lettering because of the unique and artistic qualities it gives to what could other wise be average lettering or type. Knowing a little about the art of hand-lettering, as I have tried to tackle it before, when I see a sign so brilliantly (the Britt's are clearly making an impression me) done I can't help but take a second to admire the detail and creativity throughout such pieces. One thing that I have paid close attention to with hand-lettering signs are the materials used and can see that they make a huge difference in presentation and effectiveness toward the viewers. I found the signs that are painted onto chalkboards seemed to stand out much better; this may be because they create bolder and denser lines which adds more contrast, as well as longer durability throughout the day, not being smudging by the hundreds of tourists passing by. Some of the hand painted signs below include, the Wright Brothers sign, the fish & chips sign, as well as the two Turf Tavern Signs. However, I have also seen some signs done in other materials, such as the fresh juice sign done in white chalk, and the Waterstones's sign done in gold metallic pen. These signs are just as beautiful, especially the Waterstones one, I love the variations in letter sizes as well type faces. Hand-lettering is becoming more and more popular, not only throughout London, but back home in the US as well. I thoroughly enjoy the look and aesthetic of hand-lettering and will continue to keep my eyes peeled for more throughout my travels! Enjoy this post and I'll talk to you soon!
